Why should I play an instrument?
What instruments do I have the choice to play in 4th grade?
You will have a choice to play the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. There may also be a possibility to study the French horn or saxophone. Mrs. Bennett and Ms. Brush will be visiting third grade music classes in June to model and demonstrate each instrument. Students will list their top three choices and be granted one of the three choices based on their ability to handle the instrument/produce a sound, and on the balance of the instruments involved in the program.
We will be holding an instrument open house in the gym at Point Road School on Tuesday, June 14th from 3:15 – 4:30 for any parents and students who have questions or would like to try out the instruments. All students and parents are welcome to visit! If the time doesn’t work for you, please contact Mrs. Bennett or Ms. Brush and we will arrange another time to meet with you.
Where do I get my instrument?
We recommend that you rent the instrument to start. Rental forms will be available at the instrument open house and will also be distributed to students who would like to start in September of 2016. Instruments should be rented by the end of August or first week of school to ensure students receive them by mid-September. Lessons will begin during the first week of October 2016.
How will I learn how to play the instrument?
Small group lessons will be offered before school and during the school day (depending on what instrument you will be playing. You will have a lesson once a week, or once a six day cycle). Attending your lesson is very important as the lesson time is the only time you will receive instruction.
What will I be expected to do at home?
You will be expected to practice five times a week for around 15-20 minutes per session. It is recommended that you also purchase a music stand for home practice. Playing an instrument is a commitment, but study in music is worth every minute!
When can I play in a concert?
After several months of lessons and practice, you will be ready for your first concert in the spring of 2017! We hope you will love playing your instrument! The performance opportunities expand at Markham Place!
