Questions & Answers in Regards to Beginning an Instrument
Where do I get my instrument?
Ms. Brush and Mrs. Bennett recommend that you rent the instrument to start. Please avoid purchasing an instrument through ebay or other retail store until you check with us to be sure that the instrument is of quality and will play properly when you use it. Please see Ms. Brush or Mrs. Bennett in the music room to pick up a rental form.
How will I learn how to play the instrument?
Group lessons will be provided for you every day 5 of the 6-day cycle. Lessons will meet on a rotating basis so that you will not be coming out of the same class every week. Please be sure to bring your instrument and book to school every day 5. Attending your lesson is very important. You will be responsible for informing your teacher and making up any missed work. If you miss a lesson, please see Ms. Brush or Mrs. Bennett. We will try to reschedule a make- up lesson at recess or another time so that you do not fall behind.
What will I be expected to do at home?
You will be expected to practice at least 5 times a week for around 20-30 minutes per session. Please review the book, DVD/CD and directions so that you are practicing correctly. If possible, a music stand and quiet area will be helpful in practicing.
When can I play in band or orchestra?
Students need at least 6-10 months of lessons before joining band. It is important to learn how to produce the proper tone and read music before you can play in a large ensemble. Ms. Brush and Mrs. Bennett will determine when you are ready, and we will inform you and change your schedule by the spring concert in 2016 or next school year.
What else can I do to enhance my journey in playing an instrument?
If possible, private instruction is very helpful, especially in the beginning months of learning how to play an instrument. Please check the Markham Place music website for a list of local private instructors. Mrs. Bennett and Ms. Brush are also available to help you if you would like extra help. Please check in with either of us and we can try to work with you at recess or before/after school when it’s possible.
